Motorcycle Gear: Your Guide

Whether you have just found your dream bike or are just getting ready to start shopping around, you'll soon find that there is an overabundance of motorcycle gear and accessories to complete your experience. It has been said that there are almost as many options for different types of motorcycle garments as there are for clothing in general. With so many different options, it can be confusing and almost mind-boggling to try to figure out what you'll need and what will be most appropriate for your particular bike and riding experience.

The good news is that with the advent of the internet, shopping for motorcycle gear and accessories has never been easier or more convenient. By using the Web, you can shop around and compare prices, shipping costs and times, etc. Before you start shopping, read on to have an idea of some of the basics and what to look for.

Jacket

Your needs in terms of a motorcycle jacket will vary a bit depending on certain factors. The main factors will be the geographical area of where you live and/or ride, and whether you need maximum comfort for longer rides or just something easy for quick commutes. Consider your lifestyle and how your new motorcycle will fit into it.

A leather motorcycle jacket is classic and also very good for protection. However, jackets made from animal hide can be expensive and get very hot, especially during longer rides. Another suitable material for riding jackets is Cordura, which is reinforced fabric. If you choose this option, you'll want to make sure the impact areas (shoulders, back, elbows) are padded.

You will want to choose a motorcycle jacket that can be versatile enough to use through a wide range of weather conditions. Look for a jacket that contains a zip-out liner (available as a vest liner or full liner) and also vents that can provide good air movement during hot days.

Helmet

The helmet is by far the single most crucial piece of motorcycle gear and it's importance should not be overlooked. The job of the motorcycle helmet is to save your life should something go wrong. There are different types of motorcycle helmets with different levels of padding, shapes, styles, etc. Below is a list of some of the more popular ones.

Beanie (Pudding Bowl)

This type of helmet is easy to put on and take off, but provides only the minimum amount of protection for the head (mostly the top of the head). The Beanie (or Pudding Bowl) helmet is designed not to obstruct any part of your peripheral vision or your hearing, but long rides can be loud if you only wear a Beanie helmet.

Half Helmet

This type of helmet protects the top and sides of the head, and in many cases also the ears. The Half Helmet protects more protection than the Pudding Bowl and is still very easy to put on and take off.

Helmet (Open-Faced Helmet)

This type of helmet protects the head, neck, ears and eyes. Though putting on and taking off the Helmet is not as easy as with other helmet types, many things (taking a drink, eating a bite, shooting a photo) can be done by simply lifting up the face shield.

Full-face Helmet

The Full-face Helmet provides the most comprehensive protection for the head, neck, eyes, ears and face. This type of helmet also protects you from elements such as wind, rain, dust, leaves, particles and insects. Putting on and taking off this type of helmet is a bit more cumbersome, especially if you wear glasses. Also, sounds may be muffled while you have it on. The Full-face helmet is usually more expensive than other types of helmets, but well worth it.

Flip-up Helmet

The Flip-up Helmet provides much of the protection that the Full-face Helmet provides, while making it easier to put on and take off without having to slide the entire helmet on over your head.

Motorcycle Gloves

Motorcycle gloves are another important safety garment that you should invest in before you even take that first ride. Because most of us tend to reach forward with our palms down when we fall, not using good gloves can increase your chances of loosing some skin and blood should you take a fall.

There are many different styles, materials, levels of protection and temperature ranges available in motorcycle gloves. The vast majority of gloves designed for use with motorcycles are made from leather or other textiles. Look for motorcycle gloves that will be comfortable and provide the level of comfort and protection you'll need for your rides. Good riding gloves should be snug and not bulky, and allow you to extend and contract your fingers freely.

Boots

Motorcycle boots are interesting in that most motorcycle riders agree that it is safer to ride while wearing boots, but there is no real standard for boots in terms of street riding. One thing that can be agreed upon is that you should never ride a motorcycle wearing flip-flops, sandals, running shoes (or any shoes made of rubber) as none of these will protect your whole foot in the case of an accident.

Motorcycle boots for racing and dirt-biking can be very expensive and exceed the scope of your needs. A good pair of boots for riding will be tough and durable, made of leather or another suitable material, completely cover the ball of your ankle, and have good traction.

Shopping for Motorcycle Gear

There are many ways to find good deals on motorcycle gear. Start by making a list of what you need or want. Visit online motorcycle shops or visit your local dealer to look at different options. Then, look online to compare prices from different outlets. You can also shop for high-quality used motorcycle gear by looking through online classifieds. Many times, people take up a hobby such as motorcycles only to find after a short time that it's not really for them. In these cases, people may try to recoup the money they invested in the hobby by selling off items such as motorcycle helmets, jackets and gloves to private buyers. Always check to make sure your safety gear is in excellent condition when looking through classifieds.

It really is not a good idea to take them out when you first get them so that your feet have time and are comfortable for you.

When you are looking for boots for your motorcycling needs, you should take the time to find the ones that will look good on you, but also will be comfortable on you for those long rides. You want to look good, but you also want to have a fun time on your motorcycle. Having feet that hurt is not going to make your ride all that fun is it? You can get the best boot and save money by visiting your local motorcycle gear shop and buying your perfect boot form them.

There are so many kinds of designs that you may find, some are more suited to what your style is than others. Helmets are now available in full face and half face patterns, giving riders a more extensive selection to match their personal needs and comfort levels. But, the most preferable is the full face helmet, as it provides protection to the whole of the head and is preferred by most professional drivers and by safety experts.

Jackets: Another important motorcycle accessory is the jacket as it provides protection to the body of the rider. Jackets protect riders from wind, heat, water and even bugs if they wear it during rides. Now, motorcycle jackets are available in many styles, shapes and materials. One n can always go for the best one that suits one's style and stature.

Pants: It is always good to wear leather pants instead of cotton pants when riding motorcycles, as leather pants are more resistant to wind and heat. Also, leather provides a stronger grip to the bike than almost any other type of material.

Gloves: Gloves are another important piece of motorcycle gear, as they provide safety to the person's hands and they provide added grip onto the handle bars.

When you decide that you want to take your children on a motorcycle ride, you need to find the right gear for them. But how do you do what foolproof ways to use to make sure that your children are happy with what you get?

When you're shopping for your children it's always rough, but there are ways that you can find the perfect motorcycle gear for your children. One of the best ways knows where to go. Most motorcycle gear shops have sections devoted to children. This can make it a lot easier because you can shop for them while you're shopping for yourself.

Children styles

The styles that children will choose will probably be a lot different from what you will wear. This is because they're more interested in softer designs rather than dragons, skulls, or other traditionally motorcycle oriented designs. You'll find that allot of the kids motorcycle gear will be softer and better for the kids to be wearing. They also may have motorcycle gear that is more oriented towards those that ride dirt bikes, because kids traditionally start on dirt bikes instead of starting on street bikes.

Try taking the children with you

If you're not sure of your child's style, the best idea is to take them with you. Then they can choose the colors and designs that they like best. This will make it more fun for them when they start riding with you. You may start them out in something as simple as a side car, or they may even have their own motorcycle. This is really your choice; the children may want motorcycle gear that matches their own motorcycles. Take the time to listen so that you can get them the styles and looks that they want.

As you can tell there are many things vigil need to consider when your child starts riding motorcycles. But one of these the assembly and what they're going wear. When they are wearing something that makes them feel special, they will have a better time with their motorcycle riding. So make sure you listen and understand what they want. Even younger children have an idea of what they want to look like. Following these few simple steps will make sure that they get the most out of their motorcycle riding and that it's more of a family affair.

Safety Apparel Facts

Motorcycling apparel can help motorcycle, scooter and moped riders reducing the effects of accidents. Nonetheless the benefits of good quality motorcycling clothing are still widely underestimated.

With the aim of encouraging a wider take-up of protective gear ACEM, the Motorcycle Industry in Europe, has released a booklet in seven languages with indications on which equipment to choose.

This pdf has been developed within the eSUM Project ensuing from the cooperation between ACEM and four European motorcycling capitals (London, Paris, Barcelona and Rome).

The goal is the identification, practical demonstration and adoption of measures for the safer use of powered two-wheelers in the inner-city traffic.

While much is being done on aspects such as vehicle safety features, training and awareness raising, improvements in road safety can be achieved also by promoting protective motorcycling wear adapted to the type and the use of vehicle.

Most riders use helmets. However moped riders and commuters tend to neglect the benefits of protective equipment in terms of safety and comfort. In Mediterranean countries, for example, due to their warm climates, users are still widely unaware that good apparel can combine comfort and safety.

The goal of this booklet is to provide some simple guidelines supported by scientific evidence to help increasing the number of motorcyclists equipped with appropriate protective clothing. According to evidence gathered by MAIDS*, if involved in an accident, riders wearing appropriate protective gear are likely to reduce injuries.

A «Protection Factor» for every piece of garment indicates the percentage of MAIDS accidents, in which the protective gear has mitigated or even better prevented injuries. Knowledge about the benefits of wearing the correct apparel will help users in making the right choice and contribute to their safety.

This awareness-raising campaign precedes the 4th Road Safety Action Program, which should be issued on the 12th of May by the European Commission. The great disparity between Member States in road safety performance and risk exposure for PTW riders shows that with the same line-up of vehicles there are still countries where riding a PTW is considerably more risky than elsewhere in the EU. Closing this gap must be one of the main challenges of the next Road Safety Action Programme.

The publication of the Personal Protective Equipment guide is part of ACEM's commitment to road safety, which follows an integrated approach looking at human factors, vehicle design and infrastructure, seeking to involve policymakers at European, National and local level and other relevant stakeholders.

Jacques Compagne (ACEM Secretary General) says: "Personal Protective Equipment plays an important role in rider safety and starts with a helmet. An appropriately maintained vehicle, training and risk awareness help preventing accidents. However in case of an accident, PPE have proven to reduce the consequences of injuries. The PTW industry wants to inform riders about the benefits of PPE and aims at encouraging more and more of them to wear appropriate gear".

eSUM - The European Safer Urban Motorcycling Project is a collaborative initiative between the motorcycle industry, local authorities of the principal European motorcycle cities and universities to identify develop and demonstrate measures designed to deliver safer urban motorcycling. The project aims at improving diagnosis of the urban PTW challenges, identifying and applying good practices in Urban Motorcycling Action Plans, demonstrating advances in the state-of-the-art, adopting good safety practice through preferential treatment in the implementation of urban traffic management policies and strategies. www.esum.eu

* MAIDS - Motorcycle Accidents In-Depth Study - analyzed more than 900 motorcycle and moped accidents during the period 1999-2003 in five sampling areas located in France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Italy. I never ask this, but please rate and such to spread the word. Since leaving Missouri (where helmets are required by law), I have been appalled at the number of riders I see without proper gear. I would say at least 80% of riders I've seen here in the Chicago area do not have helmets, or any protective gear for that matter. What continues to surprise me is how many of these guys think they actually look good when they ride in just a t-shirt and jeans. Or no shirt. Or a helmet, with no shirt, and shorts. Why bother with the helmet? ANYway, I'm truly hoping this video convinces some of these squids to wear protective gear. If it helps save even one life, I'd be elated. Iroquois had a video where he mentioned guys who just want to "look cool" on their bikes. I think these guys fall largely in the same category.. Remember: Gear doesn't make you a nerd. It'll save your life, your skin, AND get you that girl's number.

The company was set up after the brothers hadconverted their father’s corn mill into a steel mill to make the mostof the industrial revolution which was gathering pace.

Since then, Peugeot has been associated with saws, tools, steelcrinoline stays, salt and pepper mills, coffee grinders, bicycles,motorcycles, scooters, cars and vans. Each of these diverse products isfounded on those early origins in steel while bearing Peugeot’shallmark of modernity and innovation.

The LionAs early as 1858, Peugeot adopted the lion as theuniversal emblem of its saws and ancillary tools. The choice of the lionwas made to illustrate the strength of the teeth, the suppleness of theblade and the rapidity of cut. Since then the Marque’s emblem hasbeen represented in a variety of ways, right up to the brand new 2010two-tone version featured for the first time on the RCZ Sports Coup.

The 201, named purely because it was the engineeringdepartment’s 201st project, was the first car to carry a number andthis evolved to become the three-digit naming system. This made its first appearance asearly as the 1930s on the 401 Eclipse but it was the 206 CC that broughtthis body shape to a wider public at the turn of the 21st Century and, with700,000 units sold, it has made Peugeot the world leader in CCs.

Diesel enginesPeugeot is also synonymous with the developmentof the diesel engine, which it made available for the first time on aproduction model, the 403, in 1959. This saloon was also the first car tofeature an automatic cooling fan controlled by engine temperature. Thepopularity of diesel was instant, with the 403 being the first Peugeotmodel to pass the one million sales mark.

More diesel innovations were to follow: in 1975, the 604 became thefirst car in Europe to be equipped with a turbo diesel engine and, in 1999,the 607 was the world’s first car to be equipped with a particleemissions filter, a technology that has helped cement Peugeot’sposition as a world leader in emissions reductions. More than 2.3 millionPeugeots are equipped with the particle emissions filter.

The environment drives further innovationIt was as early as1941 that Peugeot first pioneered electric power with the VLV, a lighturban vehicle with an electric motor, several hundred of which found theirway onto the streets of Paris. However, concern over man’s effect onthe climate from the late 20th Century has driven an explosion in lowcarbon technologies. In the autumn of 2010, Peugeot will return to the electric car marketwith the iOn and next year, Peugeot will marry internal combustion withelectric power in the 3008 HYbrid4, a diesel-electric hybrid producing 35%less CO2 than a diesel engine. This set-up also offers great drivingflexibility with optional four wheel drive.

In 2012, another major step will be taken with the rechargeable plug-in3008 HYbrid that will produce just 50g CO2/km.

Environmental performance driven by competitive performanceAslong as there have been motor races, there have been Peugeots to take partin them, starting with the first ever race in 1895, the Paris –Bordeaux – Paris, which was won by a Peugeot.

Success in those early pioneering events drove Peugeot to startdeveloping cars for motor sport, with equal success, starting with the L76at Brooklands in 1913. The L76 was powered by the first engine with twooverhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. It was the precursor tothe victorious “Grand Prix” campaigns which saw Peugeot takethe chequered flag at the Indianapolis 500 in 1913, 1916 and 1919.

The 1920s saw successes at the Targa Coppa Florio and Spa 24 Hoursbefore one of the Marque’s dealers, Darl’mat, inspired thecreation of a competition variant of the 302, the 302 Special Sport. Thisgained distinction in the 24 Hours, with three cars crossing the finishingline at the 1937 event, before making its mark the following year in the 2litre category.

More recently, the successful African campaigns of the 404 and 504forged a reputation for reliability among the Marque’s models,establishing a direct link between production cars and their motor sportderivatives. Of all Peugeots however, it is the 205 that symbolises moststrongly the Marque’s competitive spirit, evident not onlycommercially but also on motor racing circuits the world over. Thisappetite for competition led Peugeot to organise a Competition Department,producing racing models that would win in a variety of demandingcompetitive events ranging from standard and long-distance rallies toFormula 1 and Endurance.

Today, endurance and fuel-economy are watch-words for Peugeot alongsideperformance and so Le Mans has become a natural focus, with the Peugeot 908HDi FAP taking the double in 2009. Peugeot is looking to the future bykeeping close watch on a hybrid endurance prototype, the 908 HY.

Style: a key factor of Peugeot's identityPeugeot hasreaffirmed its ambition to be a reference in terms of style with its latestconcept, the SR1, an elegant roadster with ideal proportions. Whilstadopting the most modern styling ideas, SR1 carries the same Peugeot genesshared by stand-out models from the past, such as the 402, the 404, the504, the 205, the 406 Coup and not forgetting the brand new RCZ, which issure to become a classic in its own right.

Peugeot has also held a number of styling collaborations, starting inthe 1930s with the superb 302 roadsters and coups and later, Peugeot drewinspiration from the Turin based coachbuilder Pininfarina for the 403 in1955. This collaboration proved particularly prolific and gave rise toseveral of the Marque’s finest designs: the 504 Coup, 306 Cabrioletand 406 Coup.

Looking forward, the BB1 and SR1, initiatives of Jean-Pierre Plou andGilles Vidal, convey strong messages for the future. The BB1 4-seater zeroemissions micro-car concept opens up new avenues in urban mobility whilstthe SR1 for its part lifts the veil on large Peugeots of tomorrow.
