A Ride Without Motorcycle Leathers

Have you ever wished you had a good set of motorcycle leathers?  I will never forget the winter of 1987.  My wife and I were living on the North shore of Chicago.  She was working as an elementary school teacher and I was finishing grad school.  Money was tight, so a second car was out of the question.  The hassle of sharing a vehicle has always been more than I can stand to endure, so I began looking for some other form of cheap transportation.  In those days I had yet to own a motorcycle, but I had always wanted one.  While driving by the local shopping mall near our neighborhood, I noticed a motorcycle sitting beside the road with a for sale sign hanging off the front forks.  It looked pretty small, but as the chrome glinted in the sun I found myself strangely drawn to pull over and check it out.

The bike was a 1972 Honda CB350, and for being 16 years old at the time, it was in great condition.  It looked like it had been barely ridden and then tucked away in a garage somewhere.  This was about 23 years ago now, so I honestly can not remember what color it was originally.  I painted it metallic flake blue within the first year of owning it.  To me, this bike was priceless, but I paid only 0 for it later that afternoon.

Now that my transportation problem was solved, I began regularly making the 20 mile commute to school.  Which if you have ever been in Chicago traffic, you understand that a trip of that distance could take an hour or more.  It must have bought the motorcycle in the summer because I remember how much I loved tooling around on it for the first few months.  But then the temperature began to drop and the snow began to fly.  I quickly learned that there is a good reason for Chicago being known as the windy city.  Riding a motorcycle alongside Lake Michigan in the winter is like running naked through a meet packing plant with 100 high speed fans blowing on you.  I mean it was cut you to the bone frigid!

Although I did have a full face helmet, I never seemed to have clothing that could keep the icy wind from penetrating down to my soul.  I even remember forgetting my gloves one night and having to put my socks on my hands just to survive the ride home.  My ankles still hurt when I think about it.  Even though we now live in the south eastern United States, and you can ride nearly all year round, just thinking about those frosty mid-western motorcycle rides can send a nasty chill up my spine.

If the boots have heels, they should be low and wide to provide a stable base when standing with the bike. In a crash, boots may prevent or reduce foot and ankle injuries. As with jackets and trousers, boots should be designed specifically for motorcycling, using materials and seam construction that are impact, abrasion, cut, tear and burst resistant. Strong, tough, and flexible leather or synthetic fabrics have suitable properties. Boots should also have energy absorbers and load spreaders on the shin, inside and outside of each ankle. A stiff sole working laterally helps prevent or decrease crash injuries caused by crushing and shear strain.

Motorcycles boots are associated with motorcycle riders and range from above ankle to below knee boots They have an outside of a typical boot but a low heel to control the motorcycle. To improve motorcycle safety, motorcycle boots are generally made from a thick, heavy leather and may include energy absorbing and load spreading padding, metal, plastic and/or composite materials to protect the motorcycle rider's feet, ankles and legs in an accident. For use in wet weather, some boots have a waterproof membrane lining such as Gore-Tex or Sympatex.

Varieties of motorcycle boot designed specifically for riding a motorcycle on hard pavement (either the street or a race track) and are usually between 10 and 14 inches in height and made from a combination of leather, metal, plastic is usually greater than touring boots due to the increased potential for injury at the high speeds needed for racing.

Depending upon how form-fitting the boot is, to allow a rider to easily get the boot on or off, the shaft may be designed to open lengthwise. If so, Velcro is typically used on the inner sides of the opening to allow the rider to close the boot over the foot, ankle and leg. This allows for some flexibility for the rider to control the boot's tightness. Some manufacturers also include an internal quick-lacing system between a soft inner leg and the harder outer shell of the boot shaft to further ensure a tight, but comfortable fit. The heel of a racing boot is typically very low: not more than 1/2-inch, and sole of the heel and foot is typically rather smooth. A curved plastic or composite plate may be included to cover the shin of the boot to protect the rider's shin.

The most common color of racing boots is black, but other colors such as white, red, blue, yellow and green may be combined with black or each other in some fashion. Typical street riders may prefer all black, but racers may opt for a color combination that matches the rest of their motorcycle leathers, helmet and/or motorcycle

Buying a Motorcycle Leather Jacket - Some Tips

Some Considerations when Buying a Motorcycle Leather Jacket

The fit - Motorcycle jackets are designed to be comfortable when in a riding position so the jacket should be shorter at the front, to prevent riding up, and longer at the back to provide adequate cover. The sleeves should be long to cover your wrists when holding the handle bars and it should be roomy in the shoulders for ease of movement. The neck should be snug but not restrictive and the wrists and waist should have closures to keep out the wind.

Protective Armor - Motorcycle jackets, above all, must provide protection in the event of you coming into violent contact with the road. Adequate padding is necessary jackets are usually padded at the elbows, back and shoulders. Padding may be extra material or better still plastic inserts or reinforced Kevlar. Make sure the armor stays in place when you wear the jacket. Some inserts tend to move around.

Pockets - most motorcycle jackets have plenty of pockets. Opt for ones with flaps as wind can get through zippers unless they have material patches if the back or front. Inner pockets are useful for keeping your wallet and cash in.

Liners - removable insulated liners are great for using the jacket in cold weather.

Vents - vents are necessary to allow you to be cool in the summer. Leather is very warm so you'll overheat in the summer months unless there is a way to allow air circulation in the jacket.

Color and reflective materials - black is the traditional color for motorcycle jackets and although it look good it's not the best material for safety reasons. You can't easily be seen in a solid black jacket! Some type of reflective material is necessary but we don't want to spoil the looks of the jacket with huge neon stripes! White piping on the back and sleeves can be reflective and logos are often also made from reflective materials.

Winter riding - In the winter you need maximum protection from the elements. A jacket that is cut long, below the hip is better at keeping out the wind and cold. Heavy insulation, often in the form of removable linings is needed and the jacket should be adjustable to give a snug fit at wrists, waist and neck to keep out the wind and cold. Adjustable flap type collars are better than zips and fit snugly but not too tightly.

Leather in the rain - Leather is not meant to get wet so wear a rain suit over your leather jacket in the rain. Water will deplete the natural oils in the leather and lead to deterioration and cracking. If it does get wet hang the jacket up in a warm place, away from any direct sources of heat.

Oiling your leather jacket - You should oil your jacket occasionally especially after it gets wet using a mink oil specially made for leather. this will replace the natural oils in the leather and help to keep it supple and looking good. With care a quality leather jacket should last at least ten years.

Buy the best quality within your budget
The leather should be 1.2mm thick at a minimum.
The stitching should be firm and well done especially in areas that will be under strain.
Sleeves should be slightly longer to cover wrists when riding

But if you don't ride in a lot wet conditions leather is a better option, and doesn't have to be too cold or too hot. Leather can be treated and is available readymade with shower-resistant feature, but if you get caught in a downpour while normal leathers on, a wet leather suit is certainly not a nice thing to be inside.

Coming to cleaning and maintenance issues, there is no need to wash leather clothing after coming back from a long ride, every now and then. Simply wipe it with a wet cloth and here you go. Polishing it once in couple of months is advisable. There are never any hassles unlike motorcycle clothing made from other materials which require regular dry cleaning and some also take long hours in a day to dry.

Choosing the Right Motorcycle Leathers: A Buyers Guide to Leather Motorcycle Apparel

When pondering the purchase of motorcycle leathers, there are several issues that one must consider. While one would think that style would be first and foremost, in actuality, it is the protection that a good set of motorcycle leathers affords the skin that is of the utmost priority for any serious biker. Leather has over the years been proven to be the best material for motorcycle clothing, due to its resistance to tear, its natural warmth, and its acting as a first layer of defense by coming between the biker and the rough asphalt road. Leather has often literally saved the skin of many bikers.

However, all leather is not the same. In this article, I will attempt to address the choices that a biker faces when purchasing motorcycle leathers. We will explore the different types of hides available, the different tanning processes, and how to tell the differences.

There are basically three hides that you will run across when looking for motorcycle leathers: pigskin, buffalo, and cowhide. You may at times find such hides as lamb skin, sheepskin etc. Just make a note that these hides are inferior and should not be considered riding grade leather.

Pigskin

Sometimes called soft Leather, pigskin is very thick and soft to the touch. It will keep you warm in the winter and looks very nice. There is nothing wrong with soft leather (pigskin or lambs skin) except that it has a tendency to tear, is not very durable, and is not considered riding grade leather. If you are looking for the biker look but do not ride, pigskin is the way to go! Also, for garments that are not necessarily worn for protection, (such as leather vests) pigskin and lambs skin are excellent choices due to their suppleness and pliability. There are many fine styles available in soft leather and it is the least expensive leather out there. If you ride, stay away from pigskin for protection; spend the extra money to protect yourself with some true riding grade motorcycle leathers.

Buffalo Hide

Another high quality leather, buffalo hide is not from the North American buffalo, but the water buffalo, a native of India and Pakistan. Many leather products come from this part of the world, and the Pakistanis are world renown for their expertise in the manufacturing of leather garments. Buffalo hide is also very thick (ca 1.2mm) and can be tanned in both top grain and naked leather processes. Durable and not easily torn, buffalo hide, though not as common as cowhide, is considered to be riding grade leather.

Cowhide

The most common material used for motorcycle leathers is cowhide, chosen for its strength and durability. It is anywhere from 1-1.3mm thick, depending on the tanning process, is naturally warm, and will afford the utmost protection against road rash. The ultimate in riding grade leather, cowhide is the choice of bikers everywhere.

Whichever type of hide you choose, you need to also understand the tanning process, and how it adds or detracts from the quality of the leather. Leather was once the skin of an animal, and therefore must go through a tanning process to strengthen it, and to keep it from decomposing. Tanning makes the skin stable and rot proof without sacrificing its structure and strength. The tanning process involves several stages, including the removal of the hair and the outer layer of skin, as well as the fatty part of the flesh. The hide is then stabilized by one of several methods using animal oils, alum, chrome salts or vegetable tanning. How it is actually finished determines the quality, or riding grade, for our purposes.

To fully understand choices available, one must first understand the term grain. The grain is the epidermis, or outer layer of the animals skin. While imperfections such as cuts, scars, and scratches will exist, the grain in its natural state has the best fiber strength, and therefore the best durability. The grain also has natural breathability, resulting in greater comfort to the wearer.

Finished Split Leather

The middle or lower section of a hide that has been split into two or more thicknesses. A polymer coating is applied and embossed to mimic grain leather. Finished splits should only be used in low stress applications because they basically have no grain. If the polymer coating is left out it is often used to make suede. Not considered to be riding grade, but can look good nevertheless.

Top Grain Leather

Top grain leather has been sanded to remove scars and imperfections, then sprayed or pasted for a uniform look. The smooth side is where the hair and the natural grain used to be. Top grain is probably the most common material found in motorcycle leathers. It is not the best leather available, but with a medium price range, and thicknesses of 1 to 1.2mm, top grain leather is considered to be a strong and durable riding grade material.

Naked Leather

Also known as full-grain leather, this tanning process uses only the finest of hand picked hides. Full grain leather has only the hair removed and is not sanded to remove imperfections, thus the epidermis remains in tact. Naked (without embellishment) leather has nothing other than the dye added. Full grain naked leather requires no breaking in period and is soft to the touch from the very beginning. Hides are typically 1.3+mm thick, and must be hand picked for uniformity. The natural full-grain naked leather will wear better than other leather, and will actually improve over the years. This type of leather is the ultimate riding grade; the most sought after, and consequently, the most expensive.

How to Tell the Difference

Finished split will be thin. Most riding grade leather is at least 1mm thick. Top grain leather is the top of the skin and has small bumps all over where the hair follicles used to be. Top grain garments are somewhat stiff when new, and require a breaking in period. On the other hand, naked leather, or full grain leather is very smooth and does not exhibit the small bumps that are present in top grain. Nor is the garment stiff when new. Naked leather is soft to the touch from the beginning and requires no breaking in period.

Pigskin or pig napa mostly resembles naked leather, in that it is a soft and supple hide, and can also be very thick. Not to say that it happens often, but beware of unscrupulous retailers that try to pass pigskin for full grain cowhide. If its cheap, its probably pigskin. Lamb skin is also very soft and pliable, though not as thick as pigskin. Lambskin also has a smooth surface.

Things to keep in mind are that most leather garments are manufactured overseas in India, Pakistan, and China. The made in America garments are going to be the most expensive on the market, and the quality of the hide and the workmanship is not going to be that much better. Many motorcycle leathers are designed in America and made in Pakistan. As mentioned previously, Pakistan is world renown for its leather expertise, and you should be able to trust their labeling. Pakistan exports both buffalo hide and cowhide garments. Leather garments manufactured in China are usually made from pigskin. This is not to say that its always the case, but you should be able to tell by price.

Remember, if you ride, dont skimp on the motorcycle leathers, they could someday save your hide!
