Motorcycle protection clothing is always a must. This also includes motorcycle suits as well. Reason being suits offer protection in case of a fall; because they are to a large extent have armor protection to offer for knees, back, elbows, shins, shoulders, hips so, you can also put on your work clothes, put a riding suit over your work clothes in about 30 seconds, drive to work in pretty much any temperature whether rain or shine, and get there in civilized shape. It would take about maximum 30 seconds to remove the riding suit.

Industry of motorcycle clothing has really gone advanced during the past few years with progress in manufacturing techniques, materials and product development and there are almost no more bikers being conservative buyers. Leather used to be the only material for motorcycling clothing in past but now a choice of materials including Cordura is very popular and high in demand. This material is lighter than leather making racing suits more comfortable whilst riding and are also far better for protection against the cruel cold or burning hot weather conditions. D600 Cordura material has fantastic anti abrasion and wear and tear properties.

Cordura racing suits are a good choice. As a matter of fact Cordura enjoy the high wear and tear resistance and is good to keep rider safe from harsh weather conditions. Also these textile garments dry out much faster than leathers so when touring, clothing made from these materials are a good idea.

Cordura riding suits are made of 1.0 mm thick perforated cowhide leather and D600 poly Cordura. This combination reduces the overall weight by half for this suit. Pre-curved sleeves with stretchable Kevlar for proper riding position are also an important feature of these suits. Dual stitched seams with nylon stitching add durability. These Cordura suits are perforated in sleeves as leather is notoriously hot in summers. Stretchable Kevlar at crotch, inner arms, behind knees and lower half of legs for perfect fit and ease of movement. Strong YKK zippers all over the suit are used..

Cordura material keeps rider warm when needed but also allow vents in the design of the garment to let in air when it is burning hot outside. Also these textile garments dry out much faster than leathers so when touring, clothing made from these materials are a good idea

Fitting issue must not be overlooked at all. Racing suit must be bit tight however; a racing Cordura suit that is too tight may cut off circulation. Just make sure the required measurements taken for buying a suit should be taken and noted accurately. Various options may also include pockets, how perforated, and will it easily accept extra armor?

Protection offered by a Cordura riding suit is not a deniable fact. Cordura suits have fully removable Injection Molded Armor at knees, shoulders, and elbows. This armor is far superior compared to what other retailers’ offer. These suits also have removable dual thickness spine protector and fixed double density hip armor. Max Black and His Wild AdventuresMY NAME IS MAX AND I LIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA. I was at home doing my homework when the phone starting ringing nonstop, the computer kept turning on and off, my iPod was playing part of a James Bond movie: “What’s your name son,” “Bond. James Bond.” Over and over again so I looked at my pager and it said ‘Robbery at Hawks diner.’I got on my red motorcycle outside after putting on my helmet. When I was on my way towards the diner I said, “Auto pilot on,” into my helmet. I called some of my friends from the helmet and opened the screen to see them right next to me.When I got there I saw that the place was on fire and yelled, “Sam take care of that! Mike lets find the guy who did this. Conner you see if anyone’s in there along with Liz.”Sam was no longer Sam but known as ICEE. Mike was searching the streets…from the sky. Mike is known as The Golden Hawk. Conner was popping a woman in a red dress and a man in a black tuxedo out of nowhere. Conner is the Night Panther. Liz was fading in and out of the fire when she came out holding a man that used to be dressed in white clothes but now was dressed in a dark gray almost a black. I was on my way over when hawk called in on his headset. He said, “Black! Black! I found him. Olympia Ultima 1 Waterproof Motorcycle Gloves

Summary: The bargain of the bunch at a street price of $68.00, the Olympia Ultima I gloves are similar in many ways to the Held Freezer gloves.

They'll keep you warm and dry, but they're pretty bulky.

Part 7 of a 9-part series.

Background You could probably wear a new pair of Olympia gloves every day for the next year without working your way through their product line.

And by time you did, they'd probably have a completely new assortment ready and waiting.

An exaggeration, of course, but not by much. Olympia's niche is what I'd sum up as "lots of decent gloves at bargain prices".

The company has been around forever and they do have a reputation to maintain, so the gloves should do the job and last longer than many of the no-name brands.

Besides motorcycling, Olympia also makes gloves for snowmobiling, ATV use and even skiing -- although some of the glove models show up in more than one category.

Like these Ultima I gloves, which are listed for both snowmobile and motorcycle use. And as sure as you're reading this, someone will send an email asking why we didn't review the Olympia "Cold Throttle" or "Weatherking" or "Prima" or some other selection from Olympia's Gore-Tex, All-Season or Winter categories.

The truth of the matter is that I suggested the Ultima I gloves pretty much on a whim. We already reviewed the Olympia 4150 Gore-Tex gloves last year, and the Olympia Commander gloves before that, and the Ultima I gloves seemed like the most basic style of heavy-duty winter motorcycle glove that Olympia (and just about every other motorcycle glove manufacturer) has been making for eons.

Besides, the price is right, and I thought it would be interesting to see how they compared to the similar Held Freezer gloves.

The Ultima I gloves really do look and feel and even function very similar to the Held Freezer gloves from Part 2 of our Winter 2008 (and now 200) comparison review. Except the Helds cost about $30.00 more, which may or may not be a factor, depending on your point of view.

So let's take a look at the Olympia Ultima I gloves...

Olympia 4650 Ultima I FeaturesThere's not much I can say about technology here. These are fairly generic winter gloves, all leather on the outside, but with a bit of a modern twist because they do include a waterproof and breathable membrane.

Olympia is straightforward about their gloves; their website provides only basic and minimal specifications on each glove without a lot of marketing hype. Refreshing, actually.

Olympia's description of the Ultima I gloves states that the gloves have an "Aqua-Tex" membrane, which is claimed "windproof, waterproof and breathable", and it works, based on our experience. The insulation consists of Thinsulate and "Hydrofil", which is supposed to wick away moisture.

Now as I've mentioned before, part of the problem with evaluating all these winter gloves is that the differences between them are minor at best, so it's really a matter of very minor differences when it comes to performance.

The 45 F FactorI'll admit that I haven't been giving the Ultima I gloves the same "finger time" as some of the other gloves in this comparison. But I've worn them enough to know that they should work well in what I'll guess is the coldest temperatures most motorcyclists will experience -- down to around 7 C (45 F) or so.

That number seems to be a critical point with all of the gloves in this comparison, except, of course, the Firstgear Carbon heated gloves (and I'll get to those soon, I promise!).

My theory involves the physics of cold combined with wind. Look at a wind chill chart and you'll notice that as the temperatures get down to around 45 F and the wind speed approches 55 MPH (88 KPH), the perceived temperature is 32 F, or 0 C, which, as we know, is the freezing point of water.

My guess is that this is a point where the cold starts to seep into the glove, defeating the insulation and windproof barriers. And the perceived temperature drops even further at higher speeds.

Wind chill is actually calculated as the effect on bare skin of the face (and with many other caveats), so I may be dreaming here, but that's my theory on why the 45 degrees F region seems to be the tipping point when it comes to unheated motorcycle gloves.

Drop below that, say down to about 40 degrees of so, and there are no non-heated gloves that I've tried that will allow me to ride for more than about an hour or so.

As I've mentioned before, all of this theory is based on riding a bare-knuckles bike. If you're sitting behind a big barn door fairing, or even hand guards, all bets are off. You may be very comfortable with any one of the gloves in our comparison for much longer periods of time.

Olympia Ultima I Glove Fit and Comfort By the way: I do have some late news that Firstgear is supposed to be sending us a pair of brand-new winter gloves that are designed with minimal insulation on the palm so they work with heated grips. I'll report on those as soon as I can.

The Ultima I gloves are about as bulky as the Held Freezer gloves, which will be a turn-off for some. The bulk is about the same in the palms and the back of the gloves, but this is something I've come to expect from winter motorcycle gloves of all shapes and sizes over many years.

The Ultima I gloves also definitely feel oversized to me by at least one size range. The gloves shown here are size L, which is my size, but they feel much more like an XL or even a XXL, with about 12 mm (1/2") of extra room in each finger, including the thumb.

I don't know if these were mis-labeled or if this is normal, but my suggestion is to make sure you try these on before you buy or at least confirm that you can return or exchange them.

Other than all that, the Ultima I gloves are fairly comfortable, probably not with the plushest liner material in the bunch but not bad. I feel no untoward ribbing or stitching inside, which is good, and even accounting for the oversized fit, there's plenty of room in the fingers, which probably also affects the ability of these gloves to stay put.

Finger, Thumb and Overall Construction The stitching and construction all seems very nice and done with care. As I mentioned, the differences in some of these gloves nowadays are so minute that it's hard to compare brand to brand. I wouldn't be surprised at all to learn that every glove in this comparison is made in the same factory somewhere, using the same tooling.

Look at the photos here and you can see that the stitching is all very straight and shipshape, with no loose threads or anything else. The back of the gloves especially have perfect little rows of double-stitched seams, and the blind stitching on the box-section fingers is also especially noteworthy.

Other than a bit of soft padding on the back of the hand (that can also be seen in the photos), the Ultima I gloves have no additional armor and I also don't see where there is any extra leather wear sections sewn on over the body of the gloves.

The leather felt stiff at first, but softened up very quickly, and the gloves now feel almost as soft as the Held Freezer gloves did when new, except the insulation in the Ultima I gloves feels somewhat less pliable.

So overall, I rate the Ultima I gloves as having very good quality overall construction with no complaints.

Gauntlet The gauntlet on the Ultima I gloves seems just a touch shorter than it should be, so it does look slightly out of proportion to the size of the glove. It's wider than most at 170 mm, but like all of the other gloves in this comparison, not wide enough to suit me.

The gauntlet has a short and narrow dart sewn in under the strap, but again, it would be nice if this gauntlet was about another 12 mm or so longer and 30 mm or so wider. It's interesting to see in the photo above that the hook-and-loop strap on the gauntlet is shorter than it could be, while the strap on the back of the wrist is too long.

Security: Armor and ProtectionOne thing's certain though: the Ultima I gloves did not pass our "security test". When the glove is on the hand and secured with its straps, it should remain secure. But the wrist strap on the Ultima I gloves doesn't seem to do much, and the glove slides off without much effort.

The reason for the failure is something that is fairly common with some other gloves we've reviewed: the glove body is too wide at the wrists; i.e., it doesn't taper in at the wrist.

Combined with a topside wrist strap that has the hook-and-loop fastener incorrectly designed so the strap can't be tightened up enough, and you'll end up with a glove that can't be properly secured, at least on wrists up to about 7.25" in circumference.

We've seen this before, and although there is a tradeoff because a narrow wrist can make it more difficult to put the glove on or pull out a sweaty hand, the ability of the glove to remain on the hand is make-it-or-break it crucial, as far as I'm concerned.

As I mentioned above, other than some soft padding sewn into the ribs that can be seen on the back of the hand in the photos, the Ultima I gloves have no other armor or extra abrasion protection that I can find.

Water Resistance The Olympia Ultima I gloves passed the "bucket test". The evaluator wears the gloves and puts his hand in a bucket of water for 5 minutes or longer, and if no moisture leaks in, the gloves pass.

Conclusion I'm of mixed feelings on the Olympia Ultima I gloves. The price is very reasonable for a pair of winter gloves, and they are waterproof, and they do keep my hands about as warm as any others in this comparison.

But I do wish the gauntlet was longer and wider, and the wrist strap does not secure the gloves on my 7.25" wrists to my satisfaction. Also, the sizing is problematic.

The Ultima I gloves are currently available for only $67.99 through this affiliate link to the Motorcycle Superstore. At that price, and considering that the performance differences in the gloves in this comparison are somewhat minor, these are a bargain -- as long as they fit.

As a motorcycle rider, I have looked at different Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet Headsets and was fortunate enough to be able and try out the new F4 Interphone systems from BlueAnt after being introduced to it at the CES 2010 earlier this month.

The BlueAnt F4 Interphone system provides a universal kit that consists of four different possibilities granting a rider a lot more freedom. This Bluetooth headset is made to work for Bluetooth cellphone conversations, Intercom communication between different riders in a pack, GPS directions and also grants the ability to listen to your Cellphone’s music while on the bike.

Now I must first begin by mentioning that I do not condone dangerous road habits and while the BlueAnt F4 Motorcycle Headset provides the ability to listen to music along with the rest, such use could divert a rider’s attention from the road and may be hazardous. It is up to the rider’s discretion how and when to use the Headset, and this post is a review only.

The F4 Interphone Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet Headset from BlueAnt grants all the possibilities any Motorcycle rider wishes from a Bluetooth headset. While riding on the road, you are able to easily and conveniently answer your phone, speak to the other riders in your pack, listen to music streaming from your cellphone and even listen to the point by point GPS directions. Moreover, depending on the actual Cellphone’s features and abilities, a rider can make and answer calls using voice commands, making it a lot more convenient and reducing hazardous actions a bit.

I was very excited to try the BlueAnt F4, for I have wondered how good the call quality would be and was hoping to finally be able and use my iPhone’s GPS directions and not simply write a note and paste it to my gloves. Although the Bluetooth headset is Universal and will fit both open face and full faces motorcycle helmets, the installation of the BlueAnt F4 Interphone system is not a convenient one. The thing is, every helmet is different, and the comfort of your helmet is a major issue for most (if not all) riders. You do not want the headset to bother you while riding both because of comfort and of course…to avoid any hazards. Still, after messing with the parts for a while and attaching all the components at the comfortable areas (some trial and error was required), I realized the difficult part was behind me, and now we can finally see how good the voice and sound quality is.

I first tried the Bluetooth Headset while on solid ground, simply to get used to the controls (3 simple buttons: volume up, volume down and the power/answer). I made a few calls and was excited at the clarity and comfort, and was also curious as to what it is like to listen to music inside my helmet…it was fun.

On the road, the F4 Interphone headset works rather well, and I was able to talk on the phone without any difficulties. With the voice control possibilities, I was able to answer a call by simply saying “Hello”, which was refreshing and simple. Using the cellphone’s GPS directions was also a wonderful addition, for I was able to follow directions as in a car but could maintain my eyes on the road and ride as I do normally. I was still not comfortable enough to listen to music while riding on the motorcycle, but that is a personal choice that I decided about prior to getting on the bike.

Overall, besides the annoying installation and the obvious hazards of a Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet DIY, the BlueAnt F4 Interphone Bluetooth Headset was a refreshing gadget to use while riding the motorcycle. Moreover, it has great possibilities that I have yet to try out which include being waterproof if you are caught in the rain, the Intercom ability which could be extremely convenient on road trips, the music streaming to entertain on the bike and more.

My story is complicated!! I have been married for 12 years, dated for 15. Second marriage, Your mine and ours. He had 3 children, I had 2, and we had 1 together who is 12. All the other children have left. They all lived with us. I was the one who raised them while my husband was out doing whatever he wanted and at the time I didn't mind I was occupied and had a newborn who all the kids loved. My husband treated me well probably for the first 7 years. Then things changed. Although I never really said much about him taking off on his motorcycle and doing what he wanted until he decided to go open his own checking acct.. Then it started bothering me. He would go out and I'd call and not answer his phone sometimes not come at all. He would take my things and hide them from me, he went as far as to go get an order of protect on me for trying to stop him on his bike and talk to him. Id leave he change the locks on the house. We never really had any communication between us. He was also abusing prescrp. drugs which I believe altered his personality. I went thru breast cancer, survivor of 7 years. He recently had a motorcycle accident and lost his left leg. I had left him 2 weeks prior to that, but returned after his accident. It had been 6 mo. after his accident and we are now separated. I truly enjoy my time alone its like being able to breath again. But he is trying so hard to convince me that hes changed and I am having a hard time wanting him back. Also there hasn't been any intimacy in the past 2 years and I am repulsed at the fact. There has been so much more happen then what I have said I wa never a good parent as far as he was concerned, all our problems were ALWAYS swept under the rug. He would tell me he couldn't stand me, lets just divide our assets on and on!! Now he is constantly texting me and telling me that he a changed man

Gears have definitely shifted. Rolling Thunder will not have a traditional audience at the White House to kick-start the 23rd annual "Ride for Freedom" rally. Officials from the mammoth motorcycle group tell Inside the Beltway they will not pay a call on President Obama this weekend when 900,000 riders gather in the nation's capital in the name of patriotism, and to honor active-duty troops, prisoners of war, those missing in action and veterans.

The informal, cordial welcome was an annual rite during the previous administration, capped off in 2008 when President George W. Bush met Rolling Thunder President Artie Mueller and others in the White House driveway, escorted them to the Oval Office and was made an honorary member of the group. Last year, Mr. Obama met with Mr. Mueller before the rally, with a few hours' notice. But alas, there's "no White House this year," a spokeswoman says.

Citing his "commitment to veterans," Rep. J. Randy Forbes, Virginia Republican, will ride at the head of the long line of bikers when they begin their momentous journey from the Pentagon to the Mall - joined by, among many others, former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Richard B. Myers and singer Nancy Sinatra.

When is a book review not a book review? Bob Tyrrell, editor-in-chief of the American Spectator, is skeptical about The Washington Post's choice of David Frum to weigh in on "Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One," a biography by Zev Chafets. The review ran Tuesday, and Mr. Tyrrell deems its author as "unfitting" for the task.

"Most publications have a reviewing policy of not giving books to reviewers who have a personal stake in an author. Frum and Limbaugh have a longstanding dispute with each other, a matter that should have disqualified Frum from reviewing the book," Mr. Tyrrell says.

He has his own opinions, the one-time speechwriter for President George W. Bush, calling Mr. Frum a "reformed conservative - one who attempts to appease liberals by sniping at conservatives for self promotion."

The Media Research Center's Tim Graham agrees, noting: "The Washington Post knows how to thrust two middle fingers in Rush Limbaugh's face, on the front page of the Style section, reviewed by David Frum, the Republican establishment's leading Rush-hater. This is a little like assigning a Bill Clinton book review to Jim Clyburn, so he can call him a racist again for 1,000 words."

Interphone F4 "DualPhone" Feature The telephone + telephone feature, known as "DualPhone", works well but depending on which cell phones are used, the results can be mixed.

I purposefully tried different combinations using the five mobile phone devices listed above; the feature works with them all but it is less than seamless, although the phones themselves may not be completely innocent.

While the manual seems to contradict itself regarding DualPhone priorities, I found that unless the multi-function button is actually pressed, the first call is not interrupted and the system does not switch audio to the second device, although a very short time-out does occur that probably represents the headset attempting to sort everything out. Your results, of course, may be different.

While this feature may be relevant to some users, it also makes me want to get up on my soapbox (milk carton) and voice a small rant about consumers, including motorcyclists, who absolutely, positively, need to have more than one communications device available or active at one time. It is incredulous the things one sees being done by road users.

The Interphone F4 owner's manual expresses my sentiments well: "Always prioritize your riding, not telephone calls." Enough said.

The Interphone F4 Intercom and GPS: Notes I am lucky in having four motorcycle navigation devices on hand and access to other models as needed. But as of late, getting the systems and devices paired up has been pretty boring because everything typically works so well! Note that I said "typically".

The Garmin zumo 665 and 660 found and identified the "Interphone F4" device in five seconds or so and with partnerships established automatically, mono navigation and stereo music audio is pushed from the devices to the headsets in short order.

There is a slight switching delay, sometimes accompanied by a burst of white noise (hissing) when audio is switched between devices/profiles, an issue probably related to the "short time-out" experienced when using the DualPhone feature.

I havent experienced a delay that is this long or this audible with any of the other motorcycle intercom headsets I have used recently, especially when employing navigation devices. It is not a big detraction however, and the issue is actually acknowledged in the Interphone F4 Instruction Manual.

In a three way configuration with the headset with navigation device hosting a mobile phone, the zumo models successfully supported the standard mobile phones using the headset profile and all basic phone features were available via the zumo mobile phone application menu.

Multi-function devices typically do not always work well when hosted by a zumo unless paired via the "Phone" feature or by actually de-selecting or disabling the "Stereo Headset" option on the device.

These potential conflicts -- also known as exercises in frustration -- can often be mitigated by first rationalizing how peripherals will be used especially when using navigation or other multi-function devices that support both "Audio" and "Phone" options for audio pairings.

On the Road: Using the Interphone F4 Intercom Many of you know by now where my priority lies for a Bluetooth helmet system: the intercom. If the intercom doesnt work well, then the system is usually between a rock and a hard place with meobjectively speaking of course.

Intercom setup with the Interphone F4 is ho-hum easy. With both systems off, press and hold their multi-function buttons for about eight seconds to initiate pairing mode. When both sets are flashing the familiar alternating red and blue LED pattern, press the multi-function button on one unit. A few seconds later the LEDs go to a steady blue state -- all done.

If pairing an Interphone F4 with an older Interphone intercom, the initiation sequence is the same, but once they're paired, the older Interphone intercom's LED will flash a rapid blue, while the F4 LED will remain a constant blue. Just remember that the intercom range will be limited to that of the earlier generation device.

I didnt actually break out the measuring tape, but the Interphone F4 really does have a very impressive intercom reach. Direct line of sight in a typical residential environment didnt result in any dropped sessions even out to six or seven long blocks.

On the road (riding, not standing in the middle of it!), typical operating range is right around 1000 metres or 3,280 feet (one kilometre = 0.62 mile). This is impressive, but not unexpected and it intrudes into the exclusive territory covered by the Sena SMH-10 system (review)

Conclusion Like the Sena SMH10 system, the Interphone F4 pleases me, a lot, and Im pretty darn fussy -- trust me. The positives include the long-distance range for F4-to-F4 communications and also the long battery life. The minuses are the minor intercom audio loss and the occasional problem with restoring the communication link. Also, I'd like to have an auxiliary audio input port, although this is an issue with most of the intercoms we have reviewed.

As I stated earlier, if the Interphone F4 intercom didnt exhibit a couple of weak spots, I would really have to toss a coin to decide the winner between the F4 and the Sena SMH-10, because everything else on the F4 makes sense and works.

While the F4 may not be the most fully-featured system on the market, its design philosophy is similar to previous generation Interphone intercoms -- it focuses on basic requirements and for the most part, gets them absolutely right.

I am thinking about getting about getting a motorcycle liscence this year. Just turning 19 so I'm deciding to take the MSF basic course this summer. This question is do I need gear before I go? Is there rental helmets? Do I need to buy gloves, boots, jacket? Reason I ask is because I know I'm going to get my gear sooner or later but I'd rather buy them later when I purchase a motorcycle. Probably if I buy the gear with the bike ill get a discount too.

SeaTac allowed us to be on the tarmac and receive him with the honor guard.

I rode in the rain with them, and the dye/oil/whatever got all over my hands and the marks are really difficult to remove. A Ride Without Motorcycle Leathers

Have you ever wished you had a good set of motorcycle leathers? I will never forget the winter of 1987. My wife and I were living on the North shore of Chicago. She was working as an elementary school teacher and I was finishing grad school. Money was tight, so a second car was out of the question. The hassle of sharing a vehicle has always been more than I can stand to endure, so I began looking for some other form of cheap transportation. In those days I had yet to own a motorcycle, but I had always wanted one. While driving by the local shopping mall near our neighborhood, I noticed a motorcycle sitting beside the road with a for sale sign hanging off the front forks. It looked pretty small, but as the chrome glinted in the sun I found myself strangely drawn to pull over and check it out.

The bike was a 1972 Honda CB350, and for being 16 years old at the time, it was in great condition. It looked like it had been barely ridden and then tucked away in a garage somewhere. This was about 23 years ago now, so I honestly can not remember what color it was originally. I painted it metallic flake blue within the first year of owning it. To me, this bike was priceless, but I paid only 0 for it later that afternoon.

Now that my transportation problem was solved, I began regularly making the 20 mile commute to school. Which if you have ever been in Chicago traffic, you understand that a trip of that distance could take an hour or more. It must have bought the motorcycle in the summer because I remember how much I loved tooling around on it for the first few months. But then the temperature began to drop and the snow began to fly. I quickly learned that there is a good reason for Chicago being known as the windy city. Riding a motorcycle alongside Lake Michigan in the winter is like running naked through a meet packing plant with 100 high speed fans blowing on you. I mean it was cut you to the bone frigid!

Although I did have a full face helmet, I never seemed to have clothing that could keep the icy wind from penetrating down to my soul. I even remember forgetting my gloves one night and having to put my socks on my hands just to survive the ride home. My ankles still hurt when I think about it. Even though we now live in the south eastern United States, and you can ride nearly all year round, just thinking about those frosty mid-western motorcycle rides can send a nasty chill up my spine.

Since that time I've clocked countless miles on everything from Hondas to Harleys, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that there is no substitute for a set of high quality motorcycle leathers. Whether you ride a crotch rocket or a big old hog, nothing beats a lined leather jacket and a broken in pair of chaps on a long cold ride. Motorcyclists are always evaluating the use of motorcycle helmets. Is this simply a matter of preference or are there significant issues to be considered?

A friend of mine (Bill) has chosen to ride with a helmet, or at times without a helmet. He says it depends upon riding conditions for him.

One day he was on a two lane road, traveling about 50mph when a tractor trailer truck pulled out from the right side of the street to go the same direction. His thought was to maintain his speed and simply pass the truck. Which, most likely could be done. Unfortunately the truck driver did not have enough room for the turn, and stopped dead still, crossing both lanes.

Bill was now approaching the truck too fast and too close to stop safely. He tried breaking hard but immediately knew he was facing the side of the trailer head-on. With quick thinking he laid his Harley on the side and slid under the trailer and on down the road a couple hundred feet.

Relaying his story to me, he was flat on his back, feet first, with his arms spread out and his head bopping on the highway. My friend only suffered from some sore muscles and hurt pride. But, it brings up the subject of helmet safety.

In the KSL-TV News of South Jordan, the Police Chief ,Dan Pearson, is likewise teaching people that motorcycle helmets save lives, after losing three friends to motorcycle accidents in two years. All three suffered from head injuries and none were wearing motorcycle helmets.

Then, the police chief himself was involved in an accident on highway 89 North of Afton, Wyoming.

A truck towing a horse trailer had passed him and pulled in front of him, hitting the front of his motorcycle with the spare tire mounted on the back. Dan was thrown off his bike, landing headfirst. He says, This injury would have been a fatal blow if I had not had the helmet on. Dan suffered from bruises and a few broken bones.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that motorcyclists survive a crash and receive less serious injuries when wearing a helmet. They report that at least 600 people are saved each year.

One question that is asked, motorcycle helmets might protect your brain but can it increase your chances of a broken neck?

Dr. Michael Yorgason, a surgeon at Montana Orthopedics and Sport Medicine, states that the findings from medical literature shows: autopsy studies done after fatal motorcycle accidents have shown that neck injuries and fractures are equally likely, whether you are wearing a helmet or not.

Yet, most medical reports support the use of motorcycle helmets. They believe that the helmet generally decreases the risk of head and brain injury significantly and surmise that wearing them does not increase your risk of neck injury.

An Italian study concluded that a helmet decreased injury by 66%.

A Thailand study found that after making motorcycle helmets mandatory, head injuries decreased by 41% in 2 years.

Now, in Kentucky, a study revealed that brain injury increased by 4.3 times when not wearing a helmet.

In an article written by Jonathan P. Goldstein, PhD. titled The Effects of Motorcycle Helmet Use on the Probability of Fatality and the Severity of Head and Neck Injuries. He concludes that there are a number of variables in a study that puts the study in question.

Major differences are held concerning helmet use or non-helmet use. Normal results compare death and injury rates are two and three times greater for non-helmet riders and increases in occurrence rates in repeal years that vary from 19% to 63%.

On one side: the helmet verses the non-helmet study fails to consider these two classes of riders. Stating that helmet riders are more cautious by nature.

One, they drive slower, thus have slower speeds in crash situations.

Two, they are less likely to have an accident.

Three, helmet wearers are less likely to drink and drive (alcohol or use of drugs). These behavior changes dramatically reduce a riders risk.

On-the-other-hand, factors to consider are:

1-average age of the biker

2-average miles driven each year, per biker

3-average experience of the biker 4-the size of the motorcycle driven.

So, between the size of the bike, potential speed, age, risk taking and alcohol ingestion; simply, cannot realistically prove the effectiveness of helmet use.

The Goldstein study did approach these variables in question. They reported a study that evaluates the effectiveness of motorcycle helmets in accident situations. The conclusions are:

1-Motorcycle helmets have no statistically significant effect on the probability of fatality.

2-Helmets reduce the severity of head injuries.

3-Past a critical impact speed of 13 mph, helmets increased the severity of neck injuries.

The report then concluded that helmet users face a trade-off between reductions in the severity of head injuries and increases in the severity of neck injuries.

Under these circumstances a mandatory helmet use law cannot be reasoned to be an effective method to stop an individuals death or injury when involved in an accident.

Perhaps other choices need to be considered in providing safety in motorcycle use. Here are three suggestions.

One, educate the general driving public (car and truck drivers) in road use with motorcycles.

Two, educate inexperienced motorcyclists on accident avoidance (evasive action) and the proper use of these powerful machines.

Three, create a strict enforcement of drunk driving laws. [Some studies show that alcohol consumption is the major factor in deaths and injury.]

Harley-Davidson offers basic and advanced training to 200+ dealerships in 30 states. Honda has four training centers. BMW is considering advanced training but says they tend to attract seasoned riders.

It is believed that training cuts panic. You need to know how to negotiate a curve and resist the urge to brake, etc.

Here are some other factors that need to be considered. Tires should be inflated to the proper level.

A riders visibility to be seen. Tests have shown that the plain white motorcycle helmets are the easiest to be seen. Clothing makes a difference between day/night.

US DOT findings discovered that following the Helmet Law Repeal in Texas and Arkansas from Aug/Sept of 1997 to May 1998, helmet use dropped to 52% in Arkansas and to 66% in Texas.

In Arkansas motorcycle fatalities rose 21% following the repeal and head injuries increased 18.5%. Texas fatalities rose 31%.

One court case in California disputed what standards were set for qualifying a helmet as safe. For a list of the US Government Compliance Testing of Motorcycle Helmets you can check to see if your helmet passed or failed. Check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

When I am on my motorcycle, I know what I am doing. I do not know what the other driver is doing. So, with the many facets of helmet use and considering the pro/cons, I choose to wear a helmet. You will have to decide for yourself!

A stiff sole working laterally helps prevent or decrease crash injuries caused by crushing and shear strain.

Motorcycles boots are associated with motorcycle riders and range from above ankle to below knee boots They have an outside of a typical boot but a low heel to control the motorcycle. To improve motorcycle safety, motorcycle boots are generally made from a thick, heavy leather and may include energy absorbing and load spreading padding, metal, plastic and/or composite materials to protect the motorcycle rider's feet, ankles and legs in an accident. For use in wet weather, some boots have a waterproof membrane lining such as Gore-Tex or Sympatex.

Varieties of motorcycle boot designed specifically for riding a motorcycle on hard pavement (either the street or a race track) and are usually between 10 and 14 inches in height and made from a combination of leather, metal, plastic is usually greater than touring boots due to the increased potential for injury at the high speeds needed for racing.

Depending upon how form-fitting the boot is, to allow a rider to easily get the boot on or off, the shaft may be designed to open lengthwise. If so, Velcro is typically used on the inner sides of the opening to allow the rider to close the boot over the foot, ankle and leg. This allows for some flexibility for the rider to control the boot's tightness. Some manufacturers also include an internal quick-lacing system between a soft inner leg and the harder outer shell of the boot shaft to further ensure a tight, but comfortable fit. The heel of a racing boot is typically very low: not more than 1/2-inch, and sole of the heel and foot is typically rather smooth. A curved plastic or composite plate may be included to cover the shin of the boot to protect the rider's shin.

The most common color of racing boots is black, but other colors such as white, red, blue, yellow and green may be combined with black or each other in some fashion. Typical street riders may prefer all black, but racers may opt for a color combination that matches the rest of their motorcycle leathers, helmet and/or motorcycle

How to Install a Motorcycle Helmet Microphone | DoItYourself.com

Installing a helmet microphone is easy to do. To get started, you will need a helmet and a headset. The advantage of having a helmet microphone is the freedom of your hands, plus the microphone won't fall while you are riding. Soon you will be riding in no time with a well-working headset.

Tools and Materials Needed

Helmet
Headset
N-42
Dremel tool
Velcro
Wires
Scissors

Step 1 - Remove Liners and Pads

First remove any liners or pads that exist in the headset. You want to try to remove these completely in order to make installation a lot easier.

Step 2 - Setting Up the Microphone

In your N-42 exists a clip in module that is used for the microphone. First you will follow the template and cut out the clip. You will lay this on the side in a pocket of the helmet. Then with a Dremel tool you will route out the piece. This will give you a hole in which you will put the microphone cord through.

Step 3 - Placement of the Speakers

On the lower edge of the shell of the helmet you will place a mark 3/4 of an inch at that point. This is where you want the location of your speakers to be. Also, this will serve as the top edge of the speaker.

Step 4 - Cutting into the Speaker

With the speaker as your guide, take a knife and cut out sections for your speakers to go in. Remember not to cut in too deep because that will interfere with your chin strap. Next take out the foam pieces. This will serve as the pocket for your speakers.

Step 5 - Wiring the N-42's Microphone

First put the microphone into the hole that you just made in your pocket. Next, put the wires through the rear hole. Then gently bend the microphone into the hole that your made for your microphone pocket. Slowly pull the wires through the hole while putting the microphone boom in from the exterior. Make sure to clip in place the front first and then do the back.

Step 6 - Tucking the Wire

Once you bring in the longer wire around the back of your helmet and to the other side, you will tuck this wire up into the helmet.

Step 7 - The Speakers

Hold the speakers in place with Velcro. Place the Velcro on the chin strap and attach the other side to the speakers. Now you can put the speakers in the pocket of the helmet that you made.

Step 8 - Installing the Liner

Once the speakers are in place, you can install liner. Be sure to test your headset to make sure it is working properly. Now you are able to listen to music while riding. Be sure to consult riding regulations on the use of headsets and always remember to wear protective gear while riding.
