CFL decides to get in tune with quarterback headsets

The Canadian Football League announced Tuesday that quarterbacks will have special headsets in their helmets for the 2010 season, allowing them to easily hear signals being conveyed from the sidelines between plays.

That is music to Dave Dickenson's ears.

"I just think the communication thing is going to really help,'' suggested Dickenson, the Calgary Stampeders' quarterbacks coach, "especially, honest, as a coach it takes a lot of memorization and coming up with special signals. This lets you focus on football. We have an open line of communication now. Hopefully, we can do a better job of coaching. I think things will go smoother and hopefully we'll have a better pace to the game and we'll be able to execute better.''

This is how the newfangled system will work, according to the release sent out by the CFL.

-Each team will have three separate radio-in-helmet units, one for each dressed QB.

-Only one system is allowed to be "active'' on field at any one time.

-Communication is one-way; the QB has no microphone.

-Coaches on the sideline and in the spotter's booth can communicate via the system.

-The device is turned on once a team gains possession and turned off when there are 10 seconds remaining on the play clock. The signal will not be switched back on until the play is whistled dead.

-The signal will be monitored and recorded in the Command Centre at CFL headquarters.

-The specially equipped helmets will be marked with an identifying decal.

"We have a one-game advantage because two years ago, maybe last year, during a pre-season game we experimented with the headsets for the league,'' said head coach and GM John Hufnagel. "It was versus Edmonton. Everything went smoothly.

"I think the flow will be very similar. It might help give the offences more opportunities to go into no-huddle situations, but I'm not sure about that.''

The CFL took its time studying the innovation, but Dickenson says he understands the careful deliberation.

"They wanted to make sure they had the best system in place,'' he shrugged. "Take out any hiccup. There's always the potential we could have problems, but that's technology. We will definitely deal with those.

"I got experience with the headset (in the NFL) and I could hear. It is loud, but you need to have some sort of backup system in place. But I don't remember having a major problem. We'll deal with the noise and we'll have a better chance of being on the same page.''

Stamps pivot Henry Burris also had the chance to use the headsets south of the border and recognizes the impact of having just a little more time to set up the offence.

"It allows us to maximize the 20 seconds on the play clock,'' he explained. "It's not a lot of time; now, you make your signal and getting the right substitutions in while the play is being relayed to you through the headset. It allows us a few more seconds.''

It'll make, Burris insists, the CFL a better game.

"It definitely can. It'll make plays happen quicker. It'll allow offences to execute better; just the fact that everyone's on top of what they're supposed to do.

"It is exciting. In the NFL, you have 40 seconds; up here, you have half the time so any opportunity to improve our communication, make it quicker, it's going to make offensive execution that much more eff ective.''

Let say that the NHL decided to put a new rule into the fan’s hands. I know, I know….not more rules! So here’s the deal. Varlamov made a comment about Downie having Down syndrome (saying he lives up to his surname) during the IIHF Worlds Championships during an interview. Harsh…I know. I heard of a story years ago of Emery trash talking Blake about his cancer. Some of this “smack talk” is crazy…so here’s the deal:Let say the NHL has a poll on their website. This is going to be a rule in the NHL in Homes Fantasyquestionland so if you simply hate this rule and refuse to play along, then do not bother answering and go pee up a tree. You can select as many as you feel are correct OR only one OR all of them. How would you fill out this poll for the NEW Smack Talk rule? That was a pretty common reaction when I first started taking long rides on a motorcycle. People have gotten a bit more used to my wanderings but it still comes up for both me and Ennie.

I’ll add camping to the mix as well just for fun.

So, why a motorcycle? Why not a car? Why camping? They all relate to one another. It’s the same as why do people go backpacking/camping. Can’t you just drive to where you’re going? Why walk?

The little things are what makes travel on a bike different from a car. The subtle temperature differences as you go up and down rolling hills gets you connected to the environment around you. The sometimes unpleasant weather (not a problem if you’re geared up for it BTW) that makes the good times all the better. The 360-degree view of the world. The leaning into turns. Riding along looking over your windshield feels like you are flying over the road. On top of all that the very nature of a motorcycle forces you to be in the moment – it requires more attention to what you’re doing to make sure you stay safe. You don’t generally think of the random day-to-day issues while riding.

People always wonder about safety too. If you wear the right equipment then you’re a few steps ahead of the folks that ride around with shorts and a T-shirt. A good helmet is obviously a must. The rest of the gear is important too: armored riding suit, gloves and boots will go a long way of keeping you safe if the worst happens. Besides, it’s more comfortable riding when you’re not worried it might rain; a lot of the suits are waterproof as well!

The camping combined with the motorcycle forces you to figure out what you really need to take with you. It’s easy to camp with a Winnebago, you just cram all of your stuff in and hitch it up. On a bike (like backpacking) you need to limit yourself to what you need. On my bike I have roughly 120 liters of storage volume between the panniers, tank bag and other bags strapped to the bike. It sounds like a lot up until you think that even a relatively small car like a Honda Civic has easily twice that in trunk space (12 ft^3 = 340 l). And that’s not counting any of the space in the passenger compartment (think of food, purses, drinks, anything) which adds over 2500 liters more space. When you need to jettison items and luxuries you can figure out what you need.

An interesting difference between motorcycle camping and backpacking is what’s the limiting factor. When you’re camping, every gram counts since you’re carrying it the whole way. On a bike the thing that always gets me is size. While small thing tend to be light, some of the biggest things I need are also light. A tent is only three pounds, but it takes up a lot of space. Same with sleeping bags. Those things would cause any problem when you’re backpacking, but on a bike they’re harder to fit on for some reason.

Camping: It adds a lot of extra gear that you need to carry with you. The tent, sleeping bags, stove and other various items. Sure, it’s more work, but then there’s waking up in a tent in the woods to the sunrise and brewing a cup of coffee and just taking in the world around you. It’s things like that that makes it all worth while.

While going for a long ride on your motorbike, you must be anticipating sheer fun. And if it’s all about the crash then you may assume why this will happen now? Well, a crash can happen anytime even if there is no fault at your end! So be careful about this and don’t ever try to ignore this fact. Due to this reason many Governments have implemented few rules on motorcycle helmets so that riders can get maximum risk free zone to enjoy their riding.

A concise history of the implemented Law:

Way back in the year 1967, the US federal govt. had declared that it will not offer funding to states that don not have any law for motorcycle helmets. By 1975, around 47 states had implemented their law on compulsory helmets for bikers. But in the year 1976 most of them had soften the laws that have been implemented for motorcycle helmets.

Kentucky and Louisiana:

In the year 1990, Kentucky and Louisiana has softened their helmet laws too. While the law was first proposed 10% of the bike riders were using helmet and when the law was not there half of the whole bike riders were in the helmets. Suddenly after this act from motorcycle owners the fatalities rate has increased to 34% in Kentucky and 74% for Louisiana.

Texas Wasn’t Far Behind

After Kentucky and Louisiana, Texas has also taken the helmet law off from the book in 1997. Use of helmet had dropped from 69% to 66%. Therefore, the motorcycle accidents and its related deaths had risen up to 1/3rd. that exactly signifies the death ratio was almost in a straight line to the people that don’t use helmets.

Florida’s Example:

Florida is not also out of this notion and had canceled the helmet law in 1997-99. 515 motorcycle riders were killed in the accidents in that year alone. 48 out of the whole deaths were the people that weren’t wearing helmets while riding.

These ratios can bring us brief ideas that while we thought about helmet as an optional element while riding motorbike, this act can bring us sheer danger for life. the strategies has given clear evidence that roughly 400 people die in accidents even while using helmets, while the death ratio is ten times more for the people that don’t use helmets. Well, this is absolutely coincidental but a real fact. Helmets can save your life on that terrible day!

Helmet Law Defense League:

This is a group of people that strictly disobey the helmet laws. They believe that it is absolutely unconstitutional and by this the govt. is exactly forcing people to buy and use helmets. They argue that the word "Helmet" is vague.

Motorcycle helmet lock

On the last month off 2008 i was riding along a long stretch of road in the back country of the high lands, so i decided to take a pit stopand leave my helmet on my bike not thinking about some one taking it when i return to my bike my to my suprise it was gone this is why i decided to buy a motorcycle helmet lock with this new motorcycle helmet lock my helmet will remain safe so if you had your helmet stolen go get one.

MY helmet was never to be seen again but i know it will never happen to me again because of the helmet lock that i just got but the sad part is this is happening all over the world and we need to let the world no that we will unite and stop this from happening.

One of the good things that came out of this was that i was able to save one of my friend from having his stolen as well

two week after some young kid try to take his helmet off his bike but the day before i bought hin a motorcycle helmet lock, it really works.

What would have happen if i did not buy theat lock he would have his helmet stolen just like mine but well will unit and stop this from happening itf you dont have a helmet lock get one for you and your friends.

Vinita man dies in motorcycle accident
BERNICE - A Vinita man died Friday when his motorcycle ran off the road two miles west of Bernice in Delaware County, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. Brian R. Tippett, 38, was driving east on State Highway 85A when the motorcycle ran off the road and into a ditch about 11:30 p.m., troopers said. Tippett died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, troopers said.

All of us who enjoy the sense of freedom and pleasure from motorcycle riding want to continue to ride as long as we are able. In addition to keeping ourselves physically and mentally fit for riding, it only makes sense to protect against the bumps and bruises that we might suffer from even a simple tip-over.

Shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops can't protect against road-rash, or worse, so 'get the good stuff' - helmet, gloves, boots plus armored pants and jacket and really enjoy this wonderful sport!
