This type of helmet also protects you from elements such as wind, rain, dust, leaves, particles and insects. Putting on and taking off this type of helmet is a bit more cumbersome, especially if you wear glasses. Also, sounds may be muffled while you have it on. The Full-face helmet is usually more expensive than other types of helmets, but well worth it.

Flip-up Helmet

The Flip-up Helmet provides much of the protection that the Full-face Helmet provides, while making it easier to put on and take off without having to slide the entire helmet on over your head.

Motorcycle Gloves

A Ride Without Motorcycle Leathers

Have you ever wished you had a good set of motorcycle leathers? I will never forget the winter of 1987. My wife and I were living on the North shore of Chicago. She was working as an elementary school teacher and I was finishing grad school. Money was tight, so a second car was out of the question. The hassle of sharing a vehicle has always been more than I can stand to endure, so I began looking for some other form of cheap transportation. In those days I had yet to own a motorcycle, but I had always wanted one. While driving by the local shopping mall near our neighborhood, I noticed a motorcycle sitting beside the road with a for sale sign hanging off the front forks. It looked pretty small, but as the chrome glinted in the sun I found myself strangely drawn to pull over and check it out.

The bike was a 1972 Honda CB350, and for being 16 years old at the time, it was in great condition. It looked like it had been barely ridden and then tucked away in a garage somewhere. This was about 23 years ago now, so I honestly can not remember what color it was originally. I painted it metallic flake blue within the first year of owning it. To me, this bike was priceless, but I paid only 0 for it later that afternoon.

Now that my transportation problem was solved, I began regularly making the 20 mile commute to school. Which if you have ever been in Chicago traffic, you understand that a trip of that distance could take an hour or more. It must have bought the motorcycle in the summer because I remember how much I loved tooling around on it for the first few months. But then the temperature began to drop and the snow began to fly. I quickly learned that there is a good reason for Chicago being known as the windy city. Riding a motorcycle alongside Lake Michigan in the winter is like running naked through a meet packing plant with 100 high speed fans blowing on you. I mean it was cut you to the bone frigid!

Although I did have a full face helmet, I never seemed to have clothing that could keep the icy wind from penetrating down to my soul. I even remember forgetting my gloves one night and having to put my socks on my hands just to survive the ride home. My ankles still hurt when I think about it. Even though we now live in the south eastern United States, and you can ride nearly all year round, just thinking about those frosty mid-western motorcycle rides can send a nasty chill up my spine.

Since that time I've clocked countless miles on everything from Hondas to Harleys, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that there is no substitute for a set of high quality motorcycle leathers. Whether you ride a crotch rocket or a big old hog, nothing beats a lined leather jacket and a broken in pair of chaps on a long cold ride. Along with protection leather provides warmth especially in cold weather. Leather is also waterproof which helps the biker in case of rain. In warmer weather the vented versions of the jackets help them not be so hot to wear.

Wear Motorcycle Helmets? That Is A Good Question!

Motorcyclists are always evaluating the use of motorcycle helmets. Is this simply a matter of preference or are there significant issues to be considered?

A friend of mine (Bill) has chosen to ride with a helmet, or at times without a helmet. He says it depends upon riding conditions for him.

One day he was on a two lane road, traveling about 50mph when a tractor trailer truck pulled out from the right side of the street to go the same direction. His thought was to maintain his speed and simply pass the truck. Which, most likely could be done. Unfortunately the truck driver did not have enough room for the turn, and stopped dead still, crossing both lanes.

Bill was now approaching the truck too fast and too close to stop safely. He tried breaking hard but immediately knew he was facing the side of the trailer head-on. With quick thinking he laid his Harley on the side and slid under the trailer and on down the road a couple hundred feet.

Relaying his story to me, he was flat on his back, feet first, with his arms spread out and his head bopping on the highway. When all was finished he gave credit to God for helping him and praised his destroyed helmet for saving his life. Plus, the leather jacket and gloves that had taken the tears in place of him.

My friend only suffered from some sore muscles and hurt pride. But, it brings up the subject of helmet safety.

In the KSL-TV News of South Jordan, the Police Chief ,Dan Pearson, is likewise teaching people that motorcycle helmets save lives, after losing three friends to motorcycle accidents in two years. All three suffered from head injuries and none were wearing motorcycle helmets.

Then, the police chief himself was involved in an accident on highway 89 North of Afton, Wyoming.

A truck towing a horse trailer had passed him and pulled in front of him, hitting the front of his motorcycle with the spare tire mounted on the back. Dan was thrown off his bike, landing headfirst. He says, This injury would have been a fatal blow if I had not had the helmet on. Dan suffered from bruises and a few broken bones.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that motorcyclists survive a crash and receive less serious injuries when wearing a helmet. They report that at least 600 people are saved each year.

One question that is asked, motorcycle helmets might protect your brain but can it increase your chances of a broken neck?

Dr. Michael Yorgason, a surgeon at Montana Orthopedics and Sport Medicine, states that the findings from medical literature shows: autopsy studies done after fatal motorcycle accidents have shown that neck injuries and fractures are equally likely, whether you are wearing a helmet or not.

Yet, most medical reports support the use of motorcycle helmets. They believe that the helmet generally decreases the risk of head and brain injury significantly and surmise that wearing them does not increase your risk of neck injury.

An Italian study concluded that a helmet decreased injury by 66%.

A Thailand study found that after making motorcycle helmets mandatory, head injuries decreased by 41% in 2 years.

Now, in Kentucky, a study revealed that brain injury increased by 4.3 times when not wearing a helmet.

In an article written by Jonathan P. Goldstein, PhD. titled The Effects of Motorcycle Helmet Use on the Probability of Fatality and the Severity of Head and Neck Injuries. He concludes that there are a number of variables in a study that puts the study in question.

Major differences are held concerning helmet use or non-helmet use. Normal results compare death and injury rates are two and three times greater for non-helmet riders and increases in occurrence rates in repeal years that vary from 19% to 63%.

On one side: the helmet verses the non-helmet study fails to consider these two classes of riders. Stating that helmet riders are more cautious by nature.

One, they drive slower, thus have slower speeds in crash situations.

Two, they are less likely to have an accident.

Three, helmet wearers are less likely to drink and drive (alcohol or use of drugs). These behavior changes dramatically reduce a riders risk.

On-the-other-hand, factors to consider are:

1-average age of the biker

2-average miles driven each year, per biker

3-average experience of the biker 4-the size of the motorcycle driven.

So, between the size of the bike, potential speed, age, risk taking and alcohol ingestion; simply, cannot realistically prove the effectiveness of helmet use.

The Goldstein study did approach these variables in question. They reported a study that evaluates the effectiveness of motorcycle helmets in accident situations. The conclusions are:

1-Motorcycle helmets have no statistically significant effect on the probability of fatality.

2-Helmets reduce the severity of head injuries.

3-Past a critical impact speed of 13 mph, helmets increased the severity of neck injuries.

The report then concluded that helmet users face a trade-off between reductions in the severity of head injuries and increases in the severity of neck injuries.

Under these circumstances a mandatory helmet use law cannot be reasoned to be an effective method to stop an individuals death or injury when involved in an accident.

A riders visibility to be seen. Tests have shown that the plain white motorcycle helmets are the easiest to be seen. Clothing makes a difference between day/night.

US DOT findings discovered that following the Helmet Law Repeal in Texas and Arkansas from Aug/Sept of 1997 to May 1998, helmet use dropped to 52% in Arkansas and to 66% in Texas.

In Arkansas motorcycle fatalities rose 21% following the repeal and head injuries increased 18.5%. Texas fatalities rose 31%.

One court case in California disputed what standards were set for qualifying a helmet as safe. For a list of the US Government Compliance Testing of Motorcycle Helmets you can check to see if your helmet passed or failed. Check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Buying a Motorcycle Leather Jacket - Some Tips

Motorcycle jackets are, of course, an essential item for motorcycle riders and reflect the personality of the wearer. There are many other considerations however, apart from good looks. High on the list of priorities is how well the jacket will protect you in the event of an accident. Is the jacket comfortable when riding and suitable for both summer and winter wear? Motorcycle jackets are expensive so they should be durable and last for many years.

Some Considerations when Buying a Motorcycle Leather Jacket

The fit - Motorcycle jackets are designed to be comfortable when in a riding position so the jacket should be shorter at the front, to prevent riding up, and longer at the back to provide adequate cover. The sleeves should be long to cover your wrists when holding the handle bars and it should be roomy in the shoulders for ease of movement. The neck should be snug but not restrictive and the wrists and waist should have closures to keep out the wind.

Protective Armor - Motorcycle jackets, above all, must provide protection in the event of you coming into violent contact with the road. Adequate padding is necessary jackets are usually padded at the elbows, back and shoulders. Padding may be extra material or better still plastic inserts or reinforced Kevlar. Make sure the armor stays in place when you wear the jacket. Some inserts tend to move around.

Pockets - most motorcycle jackets have plenty of pockets. Opt for ones with flaps as wind can get through zippers unless they have material patches if the back or front. Inner pockets are useful for keeping your wallet and cash in.

Liners - removable insulated liners are great for using the jacket in cold weather.

Vents - vents are necessary to allow you to be cool in the summer. Leather is very warm so you'll overheat in the summer months unless there is a way to allow air circulation in the jacket.

Color and reflective materials - black is the traditional color for motorcycle jackets and although it look good it's not the best material for safety reasons. You can't easily be seen in a solid black jacket! Some type of reflective material is necessary but we don't want to spoil the looks of the jacket with huge neon stripes! White piping on the back and sleeves can be reflective and logos are often also made from reflective materials.

Winter riding - In the winter you need maximum protection from the elements. A jacket that is cut long, below the hip is better at keeping out the wind and cold. Heavy insulation, often in the form of removable linings is needed and the jacket should be adjustable to give a snug fit at wrists, waist and neck to keep out the wind and cold. Adjustable flap type collars are better than zips and fit snugly but not too tightly.

Leather in the rain - Leather is not meant to get wet so wear a rain suit over your leather jacket in the rain. Water will deplete the natural oils in the leather and lead to deterioration and cracking. If it does get wet hang the jacket up in a warm place, away from any direct sources of heat.

Oiling your leather jacket - You should oil your jacket occasionally especially after it gets wet using a mink oil specially made for leather. this will replace the natural oils in the leather and help to keep it supple and looking good. With care a quality leather jacket should last at least ten years.

Tips for buying motorcycle leather jackets

Buy the best quality within your budget
The leather should be 1.2mm thick at a minimum.
The stitching should be firm and well done especially in areas that will be under strain.
Sleeves should be slightly longer to cover wrists when riding
Leather at the neck should be soft enough to prevent chaffing

This is the first of a series of stories about Motorcycle rides and riding. Each story will take you on a wonderful journey as well as provide many road tips along the way.

To start the day I always check the weather forecast for conditions. It is important to make sure you have the proper Motorcycle Gear, Apparel and Accessories with you for each Motorcycle ride you take. On this day, Memorial Day, the forecast was for a wonderful weather day; partly cloudy, less than a 20% chance of rain and temperatures in the mid to high 70's. Anyone who has ridden much knows this is ideal weather to go out on your motorcycle. I will go out and not expect to hit rain with a forecast of 30% chance of rain or less. If I see a forecast that exceeds 30%, I will need to make sure to pack my Motorcycle Rain Gear, forego my ride for the day or just take my chances and get wet! It is so very important to make each and every ride you take as safe and enjoyable as possible. Checking the weather is just one step but you must also make sure your Motorcycle is all set and prepared to ride as well. Are your tires in good shape and properly inflated? Are all you vital engine and drive train fluids at proper levels? Is your Motorcycle running well and no performance issues? For each ride I take on my Motorcycle I at least evaluate my time frame for the day. We all would like to live a life where time did not matter and the worry of the next day's events did not exist, but most of us do have other responsibilities and obligations to fulfill and live up to. So on this day it was decided the trip would need to end somewhere around the 6:00 pm time frame. The weather is a little cool this morning and it is overcast slightly. The trip start is delayed to about 10:30 am to allow for clearer skies. One more referral to the area maps and a travel route is determined.

Off we go! By "we" I mean myself and my lovely girlfriend. She loves to ride almost as much as I do! We embark and head West on Route 2 from Lunenburg Vermont. We travel through some rural areas to the city of Saint Johnsbury. We get to town just at the end of the Holiday parade. What GREAT timing! We did not have to sit and wait at all as the parade had just finished. We then proceed to West Danville and turn to Route 15. This takes us pat Joe's Pond, a wonderful little lake with great swimming, boating and fishing. We continue on Route 15 to Hardwick and pass through. There were no activities and few businesses were open for any shopping. We continue to Morrisville. On the way we stop at a fishing access on the Lamoille River. It was a great place to stop and have a little break. The river was nice and there were few if any bugs!

In Morrisville we turn off to Route 100 South. This takes us to Waitsfield Vermont. On the way we find another rest area near another little brook, yet another lovely stopping place. In Waitsfield we find a place for a late lunch as it is now almost 3:00 pm. We eat at a place that is a movie theater with a restaurant and bar as part of the operation! Later on in the season I want to find a movie playing there and go for a dinner and drinks while watching the movie. Sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

It is now late enough in the day for us to alter our original route so we can get home by our designated time. We take Route 100-B to Middlesex where we take Route 2 through Montpelier (the Capitol of Vermont) and back home to Lunenburg.

All-in-all, it was a very nice trip, stopped at a few places for eating, shopping and just for a rest. The weather was perfect and my Motorcycle performed flawlessly. Again my thanks to www.motorcycleleathervalue.com for all my Motorcycle Apparel, Accessories and Gear needed for a great ride!
